Chinese EV Maker BYD Targets Canadian Market

14.08.2024

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD plans to enter the Canadian market with lower-priced cars, despite potential hurdles such as higher tariffs, according to Automotive News Canada. BYD, which already produces electric buses in North America, is lobbying Canadian federal and Ontario governments to facilitate its entry. The company aims to establish a new business and address tariff implications on EVs. BYD also intends to construct a plant in Mexico within two to three years, said Stella Li, its Americas head. John Holmes, professor emeritus at Queen's University, suggests BYD's competitive pricing could be advantageous in Canada, where EV incentives are less generous than in the US. Holmes notes that Canadian tariffs on non-USMCA vehicles are relatively low, potentially allowing Chinese-built EVs to be priced competitively. However, BYD must meet Canadian safety standards and establish a dealership network. Range anxiety and winter battery performance remain concerns for Canadian consumers.
