China Appeals WTO on EU Electric Vehicle Tariffs

14.08.2024

China has appealed to the World Trade Organization over the EU's additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. In July, the EU imposed provisional duties up to 38% on these imports, citing unfair competition against European rivals. A Chinese commerce ministry spokesperson stated that the appeal aims to protect the EV industry's development and global green transformation. The ministry criticized the EU's ruling as lacking a factual and legal basis, urging immediate correction to maintain stable China-EU trade cooperation. EU and China have faced trade, technology, and security disputes, with the EU probing Chinese subsidies and China investigating European goods. The U.S. has already increased tariffs on Chinese EVs to 100%, with Canada considering similar moves. China's rise in the EV market stems from substantial state funding, giving it an edge over European automakers. In 2023, Chinese EV exports rose 70% to $34.1 billion, with the EU as the largest market.
